Last week I was invited to Mantua to present a film Marina Abramovic at the film festival called and I found a small and precious reality which can be an important example.

I was amazed to find a group of passionate people who are committed and that makes things work well, in the name of a word that recently is not very popular in Italy: culture.

The cinema del carbone is a place – that I call – of ‘reaction’, built up from the need of some residents of Mantua to find out a space for meeting and upgrading of social life town.

The cinema association is supported and kept alive by volunteers who have been able to offer a different movie or a different activity related to cinema, every night since 2002, creating exhibitions from time to time dedicated to a theme. Just to make some examples: they realized on April the 3rd an event dedicated to the phenomenon of independent computer games or another time a festival on the emancipation of women called Women’s time or rather Build Italy(built in Italy)  in collaboration with the Order of Architects.

They keep collaborating with different cultural and social realities from Amnesty International to the Friends of Palazzo Te;and Mantua Museums and give space to debates with guests from the film industry but also experts from various fields called together to go deep into the night´s topic.

They intensively collaborate with schools with after school projects for children from elementary to high school. And a series of creative workshops and labs Il carbone dei piccoli. They usually realise workshops focused not only on cinema, but also on cooking, art, books and everything that can unleash the imagination and educating! And then lectures on cinema withcarbone in cross.

Latest but not least, they took over the management of the space Oberdan, in Via Oberdan 11 since 2012. It is in the heart of the city and it aims of being a meeting point for the whole community of Mantua! Well done guys! And good luck!

People who have ideas, continually have new ideas. You are better off letting go of your ideas as it means that you no longer have to do them anymore. You are living life in the most efficient manner.
